How to measure
Measuring Your Artwork
All frames are measured using the inside dimensions, height and width. So if you have a 30x40cm image, you need to order a 30x40cm frame. It’s common to assume the dimensions relate to the outer edges. You can customise your perfect frame in our picture frame designer.
All measurements you input for custom frames will be in millimetres (mm).
Measuring your picture to fit directly into a frame with no mount is very simple:
- Lay and flatten your print on a level surface
- Take the measurements of the height and width of the area you’d like to frame. If you’re planning on trimming your print, please do so before taking measurements. If your print has white borders and you don’t want to see them, you’ll need to trim them off.
- Double-check your measurements or confirm your sizes with a friend
- Simply input the measurements you’ve taken into the framing studio or product page & we’ll make sure the frame fits your print
For example, if you’re framing a print that’s 300mm x 450mm, input the sizes 300mm x 450mm.
Frame Only
All frames are measured using the inside dimensions, height and width. The process is the same as described above for measuring your artwork directly.
Frame & Mount
Please note that the process for ordering mounts in the frame and mount designer changed on 07/04/2020. All measurements for custom frames & mounts should be in millimetres (mm).
- Lay and flatten your print on a level surface
- Take the measurements of the height and width of the area you’d like to frame & mount
- Double-check your measurements or confirm with a friend
- Input the measurements into the dimensions boxes exactly as taken
We will cut the mount opening exactly 10mm smaller in height and width to allow you to attach your picture to the mount whilst preventing it from falling through. If you don’t want any adjustments, contact us or leave a note in the order comments box during checkout.
Mount Only
The process for ordering mounts only also changed on 07/04/2020. This option is for those who already have a frame or want to resell artwork without the cost of a frame.
- Lay and flatten your print on a level surface
- Take the measurements of the height and width of the area you’d like to mount
- Double-check your measurements or confirm with a friend
- Input the measurements into the dimensions boxes exactly as taken
Mount openings will be cut 10mm smaller in height and width to prevent the picture from falling through. Contact us if you want no adjustments.
Stretched Canvas
- All measurements for custom frames should be in millimetres (mm)
- Lay your canvas on a level surface
- Measure the height, width, and depth at the corners (the widest part of the canvas)
- Double-check measurements with a friend
- Input measurements into the framing studio or product page to ensure the frame fits your canvas
Replacement Frame
- Open up the back of your old frame and remove the backing board
- Lay and flatten the backing board on a level surface
- Take the height and width measurements
- Double-check measurements or confirm with a friend
- Input measurements into the dimensions boxes exactly as taken
Considerations When Measuring
Visible Area
All frames keep the picture inside; edges will be hidden. To see the entirety, consider a clip frame.
Frame Rebate
Sizes relate to internal dimensions. Each frame overlaps artwork by 2-10mm to prevent falling through. Contact us for exact lip size measurements.
Mount Overlap
Mounts will deduct 10mm from height and width. Each mount overlaps artwork by at least 3mm to secure it in place. No deductions are made on mounts designed in the framing studio.
External Size
For gallery walls or recesses, consider the external frame size to ensure proper fit.
Trimming Your Picture
Only trim replaceable pictures. Use a paper cutter or Stanley knife with a ruler for straight edges. Avoid scissors for precision.
Fitting Instructions
Once measured and ordered, follow the fitting process for your frame type:
- Wood picture frames
- Metal picture frames
- Mount your picture
